(Sheikha Latifa bint Ahmed bin Juma Al Maktoum)
迪皮卡.库玛丽 (Deepika Kumary)

This represents the spectrum of history, cultures, and religions of the many nations of Asia. The official mascots of the Games are three seals by the name of “Barame”, “Chumuro”, and “Vichuon”, meaning wind, dance, and light. JYJ, a famous K-pop group, was chosen as the honorary ambassador of the Games.

Hence, a number of “Goodwill Ambassadors” including celebrities and many top athletes hailing from various countries were appointed to spur and spread awareness of the Incheon Asian Games (IAG) while realizing its objectives.
One of the most successful Asian players in the Major League Baseball (MLB) from South Korea is Choo Shinsoo, and he has also been appointed as the 2014 Goodwill Ambassador. He is the professional baseball outfielder for the Texas Rangers and has gained many international fans since he joined the league. However, Choo, who clinched the gold medal in 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, was unable to participate in the 2014 IAG due to the some regular MLB season schedule conflicts.
Another notable Korean athlete is Park Tae-Hwan, the first Korean to win an Olympic medal in swimming. This superb swimmer hopes to do even better than his last performance and set a new world record. Park has high expectations of achieving great success, and hopes to win more golds for his country when swimming in the complex that was named after him. The group is even responsible for the official song of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games titled “Only One”, which encapsulates the spirit and theme of the Games. This popular k-pop group had just filmed for the new promotional video on March 7th, and the crew is now gearing up for the latest video shoot!
Korea has chosen eligible ambassadors from its own country, but athletes from all countries must contribute in spreading awareness of the games for it to become successful. Sheikha Latifa and her brother Ahmed bin Juma Al Maktoum from the UAE have been selected as Goodwill Ambassadors for the 2014 Incheon Asian Games as well. These notable representatives from the Middle East are an equestrian silver medalist duo from the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games and bronze holder in the 2006 Doha Asian Games. Both are famous in the equestrian world for their jumping skills while on horseback. Representing elite athletes of both female and male genders, they are a great choice to spread news of the Games to people of all ages.

| Importance of the Games to Incheon

img_gameOverview
The city of Incheon, as well as the rest of South Korea stands to benefit from hosting the Games. Not only will it shed light onto the city that is hosting the Games, but it will also contribute to the awareness of the capital city of Seoul. As the host of the Games, Incheon will portray a future oriented city with a hub airport in Northeast Asia. The city also stands to upgrade its economy through investment and expansion of its transport and communications infrastructure. The increase in Incheon’s brand value is likely to further induce international investments in the Incheon Free Economic Zone. Beyond economic benefits to the city, the hosting of the Games also helps motivate and push for further development of the South Korean athletics system and even sports in the rest of Asia.

Not all types of Wushu will be competed in the Asian Games. In 2014 Incheon Asian Games, Wushu will be comprised of 2 major events: Taolu and Sanda.

For Part 1, Taolu ▶ http://blog.incheon2014ag.com/wushu/

Sanda

Originally developed by the Chinese military after integrating traditional martial arts and modern combat fighting techniques, Sanda (散打) was born and today serves as an exciting free-fighting combat sport. The simple concept of Sanda (Chinese kickboxing) is two-people fighting without the use of any weapons. It can be traced back to its roots in the 1920’s, when the Guomingdang (China Nationalist Party) established the Huangpu Military Academy (formerly known as Whampoa) in Guangdong, China to form a modern military force.
Since its strategic alliance with the Soviet Union, the academy emulated the Soviet methods of military training and then adapted it to the hand-to-hand combat training in the military force. Today, it has evolved a bit and has become more of a self-defense system. Today, it is the national combat sport in China for martial arts and fighting competitions. It has also been selected to be one of the sports Asian Games since 1998.

sanshou

Sanda, or Sanshou is a calisthenics sport that employs 4 key ranges of combat: ti (kicks), da (punches), shuai (throws) and chin-na (seizing). In fact, it stresses the joint use of punches, sweeps, grabs, and throws in a very unique way. In accordance with the Rules for International Wushu Sanda Competition, head, elbow, knees, and twisting the opponent’s joints, are strictly prohibited in the Asian Games for safety reasons. In the 17th Incheon Asian Games, there will be 5 Sanda categories for men: 56kg, 60kg, 65kg, 70kg and 75kg whereby women’s Sanda category is comprised of 52kg and 60kg weight divisions only. Also, the Sanda competitions held will be based on the knock-out system; the winner of each round continues to fight to win.
During the competition, the fighters must wear an internationally adapted set of equipment, which include boxing gloves, head gear, and chest protectors specified by the organizer. The weight of boxing gloves shall be 230 grams for 65kg category and under, including the women category; 280 grams for the 70kg category and above. However, the contestants have to use their own gum shields and cup protectors (under their trunks). Female fighters are allowed to wear close-fitting undergarments.

Sanda is very similar to kickboxing or Muay Thai which also includes kicking range, striking range, and the takedown range in its use of different techniques. It is deemed as one of the rising sports in the future as it not only improves physical qualities such as responsiveness, sensitivity, flexibility, strength, and endurance, but also people’s health both physically and mentally. What springs to your mind when someone mentions “Wushu”? Thoughts of many Chinese martial arts movies such as “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”, or “IP Man” or even famous actors like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and Donnie Yen might come about. Although this practice has been glamorized by the film industry, there is a rich history and tradition in this sport that originates from China.

Wushu

Wushu directly translates to “martial arts” and was first developed in 1949 to standardize traditional Chinese military practices. Often considered as one of China’s best kept secrets, this art form has not gained practitioners from all over the world but is growing in popularity. What began as a method of survival from China’s incessant wars and political upheavals, has transformed in modern times as a means of enhancing one’s health, improve self-defense skills, mental discipline, and also recreational competition. Wushu has been featured in the Asian Games since 1990 which took place in Beijing, China.

Its history can be traced back to Ming Dynasty (1368 –1644) when it was developed to train the soldiers. Nanquan is a hard and aggressive martial art as contrary to Taijiquan. It involves energetic wushu jumps, low stances, and extensive hand techniques that are often accompanied by shouts. Unlike most of the Asian Games participating countries, Malaysia has no specific national sport. As a matter of fact, sports in Malaysia are a mixture of traditional and Western games due to its diversity of cultures. Badminton, football, hockey, rugby, and sepak takraw are some of the unofficial sports commonly played in this country. Although there is no national sport clearly, they are serious contenders for numerous sports that will take place at the 2014 Asian Games.

Published on 2014 Incheon Asian Games official blog on February 25, 2014: http://blog.incheon2014ag.com/sepak-takraw/
First introduced and contested in the Asian Games 1990 in Beijing, China, sepak takraw (kick volleyball) is a sport native to Southeast Asia. The name itself came from two languages: “sepak” defined as “kick” in Malay; Takraw a “rattan ball” in Thai. It is found in the cultures of Southeast Asia as early as in the 11th century: Takraw in Thailand, Sipa in Philippines, Sepak Raga in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, Chin Loon in Myanmar, Rago in Indonesia and Kator in Laos. It is also very similar to the “Cuju”, an ancient Chinese ball game and Japanese traditional game, “Kemari” that involves kicking a ball into the air and counting the number of kicks.
Sepak takraw is a spectacular mix of football, volleyball, baseball, badminton and gymnastics. It is a competitive skill ball game which requires the use of the feet and head to keep the ball. Unlike any other sports, it is one of the toughest games in the world that postulates flash reflexes, precise control and gravity-defying leaps.

The Court

The standard Sepak Takraw courts are similar to the badminton court with the following dimension.

Playing Style

The distinctive playing styles have evolved over the years. These are a few notable ball-service styles that are executed today:
Horse-kick: the player kicks the ball using the foot sole

Sunback or Stingray spike: the player jumps and kicks the ball over the same shoulder as their kicking foot.

Interesting Facts

  1. The use of hand during the game is prohibited.
  2. There is no rotation in the defense position.
  3. It is counted as a score when the ball touches the net before failing into the opponent court.
  4. The speed of the ball can be up to 140km per hour.

South Korea Sepaktakraw Team

The South Korean Sepaktakraw national team have been gaining momentum with several wins in recent events.  In the 1st Sepaktarkaw ISTAF Super Series competition held last September, Korea defeated top seeded Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand to come out victorious.
The ISTAF Super Series is an international sepaktakraw competition organized by the International Sepaktakraw Federation.  It gathers the best team to compete in a series of tournaments to see which country is the best.
Another successful outing by the South Korean team both women and men, was at the World Championships.  This time, the top seeded national teams were determined to avenge their defeats.  However, Korea men’s team did succeed in winning a silver (regu), and 2 bronze (double, team event).  The women team won a silver (regu) and bronze (team event).
